How to say, "You should" in Japanese.

Ho ^ or Hou (Pronounced Like a Santa's chuckle ho, ho, ho)

To say that you should do something in Japanese, use the following Japanese grammar plug and play construction to make your own interesting Japanese sentences:

Verb TA + hou ga ii desu should verb

  • Ume o tabeta hou ga ii desu. "You should eat a Japanese plum ( ume )"
  • Byo ^ in ni itta hou ga ii desu. "You should go to the hospital." or "You better get yourself to a hospital."
  • Nakanai hou ga ii desu. "It is better not to cry.", or "You shouldn't cry."
  • Konai hou ga ii desu. "You shouldn't come."
    • In English, subject pronouns are rarely omitted during the discourse of a two-way conversation. In Japanese, however, the subject is usually, omitted. In Japanese, it is more common to omit the subject than to say specifically who, or what was doing the action. In the above examples, the pronoun you found in the translated English part, could be replaced by any other pronoun without affecting the meaning of the Japanese part. In Japanese, the subject is implied and there is no need to specify who, or what, is doing the action. For example, we could say," Where's Wally ?", to which we might reply, "Over there!", without the use of the personal pronoun, he, saying, "He's over there!" It is generally understood during the course of conversation, who or what is doing the action, therefore the Japanese more often than not, omit subject pronouns etc.
